New Roof Installation

New Roofs on New Framing, From the North Hills to the City

New roof installation in Pittsburgh means a roof that starts from bare decking: a new house, an addition, a garage or a porch. With no old roof to show where water likes to go, every layer has to be planned. Straight A Exterior Renovations installs complete roof systems on new framing from our Warrendale office, through the North Hills and into the city.

A lot of that work is close to the office. Cranberry Township, Pine and Marshall keep adding subdivisions, and the homes going up there are big two-story houses with cut-up roofs: several valleys, a dormer or two, a porch roof and a garage roof that all drain into each other. Every valley carries snowmelt, so we line them with ice and water barrier before any shingle goes down.

Additions are the other half of the job. Post-war ranches and split-levels in McCandless, Ross Township and Shaler get a family room or a second-story bump-out, and the new roof has to meet an old one that may already be on its second or third layer. That joint is where most addition leaks start.

Then the first winter arrives. Freeze-thaw swings, heavy wet snow and ice at the eaves test a new roof at once. Get the details right on day one.

Why Straight A

Why builders and homeowners hand us the new roof

Because the roof never becomes the trade that holds up the build. We show up when the deck is ready and keep everything in writing.

New-roof dates set to the dry deck

We book the install for when the sheathing is on and dry, then confirm the day with you or your builder so framing isn't left open to rain.

Valley-first new roof layout

On complex subdivision roofs we plan valleys, wall joints and roof-to-roof transitions before ordering, so water has a clear path off every plane.

Owens Corning Preferred new roofs

Straight A is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, and the company behind our Warrendale office is rated 5.0 across 97 Google reviews with a BBB A+.

New roof warranty in two parts

Roofing materials carry a lifetime product warranty. Our own 2-year workmanship guarantee covers the way we installed them.

Addition tie-ins woven by roofers

Where new framing meets an older roof, our roofers handle the joint. We open the old roof back far enough to weave and flash the new section in.

Nail sweep on an active build site

Other trades and your kids cross this yard daily. We sweep for nails and haul our scrap before leaving.

What's included

What a new roof installation includes

Everything above the deck, in the right order. Here's each layer and its job.

  • Ice and water barrier at eaves and valleys

Ice dams build at cold eaves and in valleys every winter here. A self-sealing barrier along those lines keeps backed-up meltwater out of the house, even when the shingles above are buried in snow.

  • Underlayment across the open deck

The rest of the deck gets underlayment. It's a second line of defense under the finished roof and keeps new framing dry while we work.

  • Step, wall and chimney flashing

Anywhere a roof plane meets a wall, a dormer or a chimney, metal flashing turns the water. A big Pine or Marshall two-story can have dozens.

  • Balanced attic ventilation from the start

We plan soffit intake and ridge exhaust while the roof is still open. A balanced attic stays closer to the outdoor temperature, which means less ice at the eaves and shingles that last.

  • Drip edge, starter strip and ridge cap

Drip edge carries water into the gutter. Starter strip seals the first course against wind. Ridge cap closes the peak. Small parts, big say in a summer storm.

  • Shingle, metal or rubber by section

Main roofs usually get architectural shingles in a color your HOA has approved. Metal suits some porch roofs and accents. A flat section over a rear addition gets rubber.

How it works

How a new roof goes on, from plans to final check

It starts with your plans and ends with a quality inspection. Here's the order on new construction and additions.

  1. Step 1

Review the plans and map every valley

We go over the drawings or walk the framing, measure each plane, and mark every valley, wall joint and vent. The attic ventilation plan is settled before anything is ordered.

  2. Step 2

Price the new roof in writing

You get a detailed written estimate with the work, materials and cost. Pick your material and color; we order once you sign off.

  3. Step 3

Book the roofing crew to the deck

Your project manager sets the date around the build and confirms the deck is sheathed, dry and ready for us.

  4. Step 4

Lay the new roof system bottom-up

Drip edge, ice barrier, underlayment, flashing, starter, field shingles and ridge, in that order, weather permitting.

  5. Step 5

    Quality-check the finished new roof

We inspect the roof, sweep the site for nails and walk the work with you or your builder.

FAQ

New Roof Installation questions from Pittsburgh homeowners

Do you install roofs on new homes in Cranberry, Pine and Marshall?

Yes. The newer subdivisions around Cranberry Township, Pine and Marshall are close to our Warrendale office, and they're a big part of our new-roof work. We can price the job from your plans or from the framed house. Those homes have several valleys and roof levels, so we review how each section drains before quoting.

My HOA controls shingle color. How does that work with a new roof?

Plenty of newer North Hills subdivisions, from Cranberry to Wexford and Gibsonia, have HOA rules on roof color. Get your association's approved list or approval letter first, and we'll quote and order from it. The exact shingle and color go on your written estimate, so you have it in writing if the board asks. Nothing gets ordered until you've signed off.

Can you tie a new addition into my older roof?

Yes, and that joint is the part to get right. On a McCandless or Ross Township ranch, the old roof may carry two or three layers. We open it back far enough to weave in the new section and flash it, so both roofs drain as one surface. Older shingles fade, so an exact color match isn't always possible, and we'll say so before you commit.

When during the build should the roof go on?

As soon as the framing and decking are finished and dry. A roof that goes on quickly protects the framing and the interior from rain. Your project manager stays in touch with you or your builder, so the crew arrives when the deck is ready, not a week after it has sat open through two thunderstorms.

Who handles permits for an addition roof?

Allegheny County has 130 municipalities, each with its own code office, and Cranberry sits across the line in Butler County. The rules really do change from one township to the next. Your builder or your township office is the place to confirm what your project needs. We'll schedule our part of the roof around any inspections they set.

What warranty comes with a new roof installation?

Two layers. Roofing materials carry a lifetime product warranty from the manufacturer. Straight A adds a 2-year workmanship guarantee on the installation: if a leak comes from how we put the roof on, report it within 30 days and we repair or redo the work at no charge. Material defects and hail or wind damage fall outside our side of it.
