When your roof needs replacing, not another patch

Roof replacement in Pittsburgh makes sense when the whole roof is worn out, not just one spot. Shingles curling on every slope, leaks in more than one room, or a deck that gives underfoot all point the same way. Straight A Exterior Renovations replaces roofs in the city and in the North Hills suburbs around our Warrendale office, and every job starts with a free inspection that tells you plainly whether you need one.
A lot of North Hills roofs are wearing out together. In the newer subdivisions of Cranberry, Pine Township and Marshall, whole streets of large two-story homes were roofed within a few years of each other, so neighbors end up shopping for roofs in the same season. Those houses have long valleys, dormers and several roof planes. The valleys usually go first.
Closer in, the post-war ranches, split-levels and colonials of McCandless, Ross Township and Shaler tell a different story. Many are on their second or third roof, and some of those roofs went straight over the old one. We strip it all. You can't judge the wood, or nail into it properly, through two layers of old shingles.
Down in the city, brick homes with chimneys and hilly lots bring more flashing, tougher access and more care with the yard. Wherever the house sits, the job runs the same way: one project manager, a written quote you approve first, and a quality check before anyone calls it finished.
Why Straight A
What a Straight A roof replacement gets you
You get a roof built from the bare deck up, priced on paper and managed by one person you can call.
Every old roof layer torn off to the deck
Two or three layers come off, not just the top one. It's the only way to find rotted boards and give the new shingles a flat base.
Attic venting fixed during the replacement
Plenty of post-war homes have weak attic airflow. We balance intake and exhaust while the roof is open, which helps shingles last and cuts down on ice dams.
Replacement colors you can show your HOA
Subdivisions in Cranberry, Pine and Wexford often set rules on shingle color. We bring samples you can take to the board before you sign anything.
Lifetime warranty on replacement materials
We're an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, and the roofing materials we install carry a lifetime product warranty.
Replacement quote you can read line by line
Tear-off, decking, underlayment, flashing, vents and shingles each get their own line. No lump-sum guess and no pressure to sign that day.
What's included
What's included in a full roof replacement
A full replacement covers the whole roof system, from bare deck to ridge cap, on a Shaler ranch or a two-story colonial in Gibsonia alike.

Tear-off of every existing layer
We strip the shingles, the old felt and any earlier roof hidden underneath, then haul it all away. Tarps cover beds and walkways first.
Deck repair
Soft, rotted or delaminated boards are cut out and replaced, so every nail lands in solid wood.
Ice and water barrier at eaves and valleys
This membrane goes where ice dams and valley runoff do their damage. On subdivision roofs with long valleys, it's the layer that earns its keep in February.
Synthetic underlayment and new drip edge
Underlayment covers the rest of the deck as a second line of defense. New drip edge sends water into the gutter instead of behind the fascia board.
Flashing at chimneys, sidewalls and dormers
Old flashing doesn't get reused. We install new step and counter flashing where the roof meets brick, siding or a dormer wall, because those joints are where most leaks start.
Intake and exhaust ventilation
We check soffit intake and ridge or roof vents, then recommend changes if the attic traps heat and moisture.
Shingles and matching ridge cap
Your chosen shingles go on to the manufacturer's instructions, with matching cap on hips and ridges.
Nail sweep and quality check
The crew sweeps the yard, driveway and beds for nails and clears every scrap. Your project manager then checks the finished roof and walks the property with you.
How it works
How your roof replacement runs, start to finish
Every decision happens before the tear-off, so install day is just install day. You approve each step before the next one starts.
- Step 1
Measure every slope and count the roof layers
We go up on the roof and into the attic, measure each plane, check the flashing and find out how many layers are up there.
- Step 2
Price the replacement in writing
You get a written estimate that lists the work, the materials and the cost.
- Step 3
Pick shingles and clear the HOA and township
You choose the color. If you're in an HOA, now's the time to get their sign-off and to check what your municipality's code office asks for.
- Step 4
Tear off and reroof with a project manager on site
The crew protects the yard, strips the roof, repairs the deck and installs the new system.
- Step 5
Inspect the new roof and sweep for nails
Your project manager checks every slope and flashing joint, then walks the property with you.
FAQ
Roof Replacement questions from Pittsburgh homeowners
Does my HOA have to approve my new roof?
In a lot of North Hills subdivisions, yes. Many HOAs in Cranberry, Pine and Wexford set rules on shingle color. Read your covenants or ask the board before you sign a contract. We'll bring samples and product details you can hand them, and we won't schedule the tear-off until you have the answer you need.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in my township?
It depends on where you live. Allegheny County has 130 municipalities, and each runs its own code office, so the rule in McCandless may not match the one in Ross Township or the city. Your mailing address can mislead you, too: Wexford and Gibsonia are ZIP names, not townships. Call your municipality first, and we'll talk it through at the estimate.
My house has two layers of shingles. Can you roof over them?
We don't. Plenty of post-war homes north of the city have a second roof sitting on the first, and that hides rot, adds weight and gives new shingles a lumpy base. Stripping it all lets us replace bad boards and put ice and water barrier exactly where it belongs.
How many days will my new roof take?
Many roofs are done in a day, weather permitting. A big two-story house in a Cranberry subdivision, with long valleys and several dormers, can take longer. So can a roof with three layers to strip or a lot of rotted deck. Your written estimate gives you a realistic schedule, and your project manager tells you if rain moves it.
What warranty comes with a new roof?
Two kinds. The roofing materials carry a lifetime product warranty from the manufacturer. Straight A adds a 2-year workmanship guarantee on our labor: if a leak or problem traces back to how we installed the roof, report it within 30 days and we repair or redo the work at no charge. It doesn't cover storm damage, neglect or someone else's changes.
Who is Straight A, and how new is the Pittsburgh office?
Our Warrendale office is new. The company behind it isn't. The crew carries 30+ years of combined experience, owner Matthew Alexander has spent more than 20 years in roofing, and Straight A is rated 5.0 across 97 Google reviews with an A+ from the BBB. Those ratings were earned before we opened here, and we plan to earn them again locally.
